GEOGRAPHY AND LOCATION
Kush was an ancient civilization along the Nile River. It is now Southern Sudan. It was in a region of Africa called Nubia. Ancient Egypt was located on the other side of the Nile River, to the North. The coordinates of Kush are 7° N, 32° E. These are also the coordinates of Sudan, the modern day country where Kush used to be.
REGIONS
The major cities in Kush were Meroe, Kerma and Napata.
The capital was Kerma, but when the royal family moved South, it later changed to Kerma.
Kush bordered Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

Physical Characteristics:
Water: Nile River, Atbara River and the Red Sea
Land: Fertile soil near Nile River, Nubian desert
Animals: fish, ducks, geese, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, ostriches
Human Characteristics:
Culture: Mix of Nubia and Egypt
Religion: Polytheism, worshiped Nubian and Egyptian Gods including Ra (God of the Sun), Amun (God of Creation) and Seth (God of the Desert.)
Education: Developed own alphabet based on Egypt's, made new artistic techniques based on other lands and spoke their own language.
Building: Built flat-topped pyramids, temples such as the Lion Temple at Naqa, narrative tomb paintings and pottery.
Daily Life: Common people worked on farms and grew mainly grains such as wheat and barley. Each farming village had a leader and divided up the labor between the people. Noble people dressed as Egyptians and
lived in Riverside palaces. They thought of themselves and acted as Egyptians. They had servants and slaves and spent the majority of the day looking over the land. Kings and Queens were army leaders and made plans for battle if Egypt ever attacked.
